After 27 years of being in a support group I have seen firsthand how someone with a bad cancer and a good attitude can beat the cancer. I have also been a witness to the opposite, a treatable cancer that runs wild. I am amazed how our society and the medical world still paints a morbid picture of cancer. Even today I heard a podcaster share how his aunt and mom had terminal breast cancer. It is hard enough having a positive attitude about treatment and recovery without all these negative perceptions about cancer.
In my interview with Lex on (November 19th) she discusses how her doctor did not provide any statistics or prognosis. He told her that the statistics are out of date and that they are not reliable. I feel that doctors should not provide any statistics unless they are good statistics. A bad diagnosis and accompanying statistics can rob a person of hope and in a way make the prognosis come true. My suggestion for you if you are facing a cancer prognosis is to suggest to the doctor that he only give you good statistics. Also, when I was in recovery,I made a deal with my doctor that after any scan or blood test to only call me if he had any concerns. This kept me from worrying why he had not called, and no news was always good news. However, one warning. Do this only if you have a lot of confidence in your doctor. I completely trusted mine.
